The important point is that you shouldn't pull down the stick which you hold with your dominant hand.  All your dominant hand have to do is fix the chopsticks.  And it's not good to be too careful when you pull up a stick.  If you pull up a stick too slowly, a crack might occur near the top of the chopsticks and once this wrong crack occur, the chopsticks will never be splitted finely in two. It is good to pull a stick straight up in one breath!  Then, you can split disposable wooden chopsticks finely in two.
